Independence Day

Independence means different things to many people. When I watch the news I know I have taken my independence for granted. In third world countries where shelter and food are donated rather than earned because of the extreme poverty it can be mind blowing to look at all we have and not be grateful.

When I was in my twenties I was not career driven but party driven. I loved clubs, dancing and flirting while out with my friends even if we all went home in the same cab after a night on the town. Harmless fun but reckless. As I got older my eyes widened. My senses sharpened and I began to think more of others on the planet and less of myself.

Maybe it is maturity or just the progression of life but the collection of experiences you endure from teens to adulthood shape the person you are meant to be in life.  I know folks that complain about the same people and issues they did twenty years ago while other have cultivated a sense of calm and inner peace that encourages them to do for others even if it means sacrificing something of their own.

What is Independence Day to me? A day of celebration that each one of us in the United States has the right to speak our minds and to have the freedom to be able to choose our own paths in life. Celebrating Independence Day honors those who lost their lives for our independence. And hopefully we can learn from their examples and cherish the gift that was given to us.
